Benefits of Using a Stock Broker

I should begin this by saying that stock brokers are expensive. However, if you are new to the world of investing and find the terminology, expenses, fees, and process the least bit confusing it is best to utilize the services of a stock broker that is going to work with you every step of the way and explain the way things work at least for the first several trades you make. Stock brokers are paid through commissions that are earned every time you buy or sell a stock. For this reason they are great for advising you on which stocks to buy or sell though their main goal is to keep you buying and selling because they earn money on each transaction so be sure to take their advice, to some degree, with a grain of salt.

That being said a good stock broker can help you learn the ropes about trading stocks when you are just beginning in your investment efforts. Their advice and services can be invaluable and well worth every penny you pay them provided you find a broker that is going to work with you even though you are, presumably, going to be trading on a much smaller scale than some of their high dollar clients. In other words you want someone that is going to work with you even though you aren't likely to be their biggest client anytime in the near future unless they make some excellent decisions on your behalf.

Stock brokers can also provide excellent insight and invaluable advice on how to diversify your portfolio in order to minimize your risks as far as your investments go while building the foundation for a successful future stock trading in the stock market. More importantly a stock broker can help you identify diamonds in the stock business that may be disguised as lumps of coal. They have a great deal of experience in this business, even more education, and often times excellent gut instincts about what is coming next in a given stock.

This by no means indicates that the services or advice of stock brokers is somehow infallible. This isn't the case at all. Everyone makes mistakes but by following the advice of a stock broker you are much likely to make fewer mistakes than if you were going it alone because you can learn from past mistakes the brokers have made and hopefully avoid future mistakes of your own by taking their advice and guidance to heart.

If the high commissions of brick and mortar brokerages are hard to come by or sacrifice you may want to consider an online stock broker. While they often won't have the pedigree and credentials of some of the stock broker experts that can be found in many financial institutions on Wall Street they also do not charge commissions that match those pedigrees and can be invaluable in helping you make the most of your stock market investments. Learn when to take the advice that is given for what it is worth and use it to your advantage. Their advice can still help you much more than trying to muddle through the intricacies of investing and online trading on your own.

If you decide not to go with a stock broker you need to understand that you are doing so at your own risk. The roads of the stock market are difficult to navigate even for those that have some degree of experience and there are few roadmaps to help guide you along the way. A qualified and competent stock broker can be the difference between a successful investment future and a loosing your shirt on your first time out of the gate. Take advantage of the benefit that a stock broker can bring to the table until you are confident in your ability to navigate these waters on your own. It can make all the difference in the world to your portfolio.

You, the dummy, and the stock market

Ok, so you want to dabble in the stock market. Unfortunately, you do not know how and where to begin. So what do you do?

Well, the first relevant thing to do is ask the basic question of what is a stock and its significance.

A stock symbolizes ownership of a company. Some view stock as certificates. So the more stocks a person owns of a particular company, the more of the company they own. And the more the company they own, the bigger the influence they have in running the company. This is called equity investment.

The next thing to do is familiarize yourself with financial terms such as price-earnings ratio, margin, option, earnings per share and leverage.

Then, it is on to knowing where and how to actually buy stocks.

There are two ways to buy stocks:

1. brokerage service

2. online exchanges (e.g. banks)

Exchanges are services that allow investors to access stocks all over the world. Here, they can buy and sell stocks without the need for a broker. Certain banks allow you to set up your own stock portfolio and buy and sell stocks online using the money you have in these banks.

Brokerage services are rendered by brokers. These middlemen do all the work for you. They perform stock market research, give advice, and buy and sell stocks according to the wishes of their clients. These brokers earn a commission from the stocks bought or sold.

Once you have chosen how to buy and sell stocks, the next thing to do is to open an account. As stated earlier, exchanges allow you to monitor and control your stock portfolio personally. If you choose to enter the stock trade with a bank, then ask your bank the specifics of setting up your own account.

If you choose to trade stocks via a broker, find a reputable broker and ask them to open and manage an account for you.

After you have successfully set up an account, it is time to study the stock market and plan your strategy: will you be conservative in investing your money? Or will you be aggressive? Are you in it for the long term? Or are you a day trader?

After you have identified your plan, it is time to do some research on the stocks offered in the market. Having a broker will significantly make it easier for you as they will do the research and give you advice. But, it is still best to study the market yourself.

Be warned though, the stock market is volatile. Be prepared for a roller-coaster ride.

Forex Trading Account Sizes, Lots and Margin Calls

Forex trading is one of the best business opportunities you can think of joining these days. No other stock market in the world allows the Leverage that the profitable world of currency-trading does. Leverage is all about margin trading. In the Forex market, it is essentially the ratio of the amount  used in a trade to the required  security deposit needed, by the particular broker you chose to use, for that trade.

Normally, for most brokerages, a margin deposit of just $1,000 allows you to control a $100,000 position in the Forex market. That's 100:1 leverage, or 1%. Or, said in a different way, a regular full-sized account, sometimes referred to as a 100k account, allows you to trade with lot sizes equal to $100,000. Each lot is worth $100,000 in currency. So It would only require $1,000 to trade one lot.

This great feature in Forex trading is what makes this market the hottest market to trade in right now. The Forex broker has given you a loan of $99,000 dollars secured only by your $1,000! This is a huge loan and, as you may know by now, this is what allows traders to make extraordinary incomes in this market. And, as you also are probably used to hearing , "leverage is a two-edged sword" , it is what can cause you to lose a lot of money if you trade without rules or Stop-loss orders.

But just as an example, let's say you were a person that likes to trade with reckless abandon, i.e., with no strategy, no common sense, no money- management principles, etc. That's never recommended for anyone, but being a Forex trader has such great advantages, that even someone with a trading mind like the one described before, will never lose more than what he has placed into a trade.

Unlike Futures (Commodity Trading), the market that most people associate with High leverage, you can never have a debit balance when trading Forex.

So, despite the greater leverage associated with FX trading, it is still arguably less risky than futures trading. Futures markets are often prone to sudden and dramatic moves, against which you can't protect yourself, even by trading with protective stops. Your position may be liquidated at a loss, and you'll be liable for any resulting deficit in the account. But because of the Forex markets great liquidity and 24-hour, continuous trading, dangerous trading gaps and limit moves are very improbable. Orders are executed quickly, without slippage or partial fills, which is just great.

And as it was not enough, there are no margin calls, for your protection, the forex broker's trading platform will automatically close out some or all of your open positions if your account equity, meaning the total floating value of the account, falls below the level required to hold the positions. Think of this as a final, automatic stop, always working on your behalf to prevent a debit balance.

Beat the System and Save

Do you ever feel like there's some sort of conspiracy among corporations to deprive you of as much of your hard-earned money as possible? That's not too far from the truth. Banks, stores, service providers and utility companies are all in it to make money. Some are more aggressive than others in the pursuit of the almighty dollar, but they all need to turn a profit to survive.

With costs rising everywhere, consumers have begun to search for ways to beat the system and save money. It takes some work, but there are ways that you can save on your everyday bills. Here are some suggestions.

* When it comes to banking, it pays to shop around. Some banks charge all sorts of fees just to maintain a checking account, while others have free options. Check with your bank to make sure you're getting the best deal they have. If that's not good enough, look elsewhere. Some banks will even pay you to switch!

* Look at all of your communications options. Many households have a landline and multiple cell phones. Could you do without your landline? If you truly need a home phone, consider dropping your long distance service. Many cellular service providers include free long distance in their packages. Calling cards may also be a cheaper option depending on your calling habits.

* Consider bundling services. Companies often offer packages that include phone service, cable and high-speed internet at lower prices than if you purchased them separately.

* When it comes to electricity, the best thing to do is conserve, conserve, conserve. Switching to a cheaper electric company isn't an option, so it's important to find ways to use as little juice as possible. Turn off lights and televisions when leaving the room, unplug TVs, DVD players and other electronics that use power even when turned off, hang clothes out to dry when possible, and purchase energy-efficient appliances. These easy changes can make a noticeable difference in your bill each month.

* Make a habit of getting auto insurance quotes once a year. Changes in the way an insurance company calculates its rates, or changes in your driving record, could make a difference in the rate you would be charged. Itís also wise to get quotes on homeowner's and other types of insurance on a regular basis.

* Keep a close eye on your credit cards. Even if you had a great interest rate to start with, you might be paying more now. Late payments (either on your credit card or other bills) can trigger rate increases, and until new legislation goes into effect preventing it, card issuers may raise your rate for no reason whatsoever. So pay attention to any notices you receive, and confirm your interest rate every now and then. If you find that you're paying too much, look for a new card with a lower rate.

When looking for ways to save money, we often overlook everyday expenses. But by examining them closely, you can almost always find a way to save at least a few dollars each month. And those few dollars can add up to hundreds in a year's time.

Wait a Month before Buying

Maybe you've carefully crafted a budget that accounts for every penny that comes in each month. Or maybe a budget seems like a waste of time to you. Either way, impulse buying can have a negative effect on your financial picture.

There's nothing wrong with buying something we want every now and then if we have the money. If you work hard for your money, you should be able to spend some of it on things that make you happy. But when we don't carefully consider our discretionary spending, we may end up doing too much of it. This can leave us saddled with debt, scrambling to pay bills or skimping on the savings.

There's a simple rule that can help us avoid impulse spending. Instead of buying something you want as soon as the thought crosses your mind, wait a month before you make your purchase. A month might seem like an eternity when you want or feel that you need something, but unless it's food, shelter, clothing or water and you don't have any, it can probably wait that long.

Waiting a month before buying has several advantages:

* Once a month has passed, you can more clearly evaluate whether or not the purchase is wise. When we first see something that appeals to us, it is exciting. We may get the feeling that we need it right then, when in reality it's something that we may never even use. Waiting a while will give that euphoria time to wear off, and we'll be able to look at the purchase more realistically.

* You will have time to do some research. A month is more than enough time to check prices from a variety of sources. You can also look for alternatives that might better suit your needs. When it's decision time, you'll be much better informed.

* The price on the item you've got your eye on could go down. Electronics often experience a drop in price a few months after they hit the market. So if you're interested in a newish gadget, waiting could save you money. This is also true for clothing, so if you see something that you love mid-season, waiting a month could give it time to hit the clearance rack.

In today's fast-paced society, it's easy to get in the mindset that we need things right now. This way of thinking leads to impulse spending. By slowing down and giving ourselves time to really think things through, we can avoid spending money on things that we could do without. And if we do find that we really needed the item, we can buy with confidence that we won't regret the purchase in a week or two.
